Year after year, decade after decade, wood mouldings and panelling remain top-of-the-list options for Canadian homes across the country. And in room after room, homeowners make thoughtful, artistic choices to modernise their appearance and expression to keep their décor stylish, comfortable and personal.
This month we want to share the top treads in wood mouldings and panelling for 2025. Heading the list is sustainability. But people are also exploring texture & dimension. Colour palettes are shifting to warmer, more natural colours as well, which suits wood perfectly

Sustainability
There is a huge movement toward building with sustainable materials to help deal with the climate crisis and dwindling resources. Cities across the country have already designed–or are in the process of designing–building plans that include more sustainable choices for commercial and residential buildings.
Wood is one of those choices. Because trees regrow. In fact, Canada has been practicing sustainable forest management for the last 7 decades. We wrote an article on sustainable wood sourcing if you’d like to learn more.
So it’s no wonder that Canadians prefer to design their homes with wood. It’s all-natural and visually beautiful but also endlessly replaceable, non-toxic, and recyclable.
Texture & dimension
Wood is the perfect medium for playing with texture and dimension in 2025. For example,
- Wood mouldings with clean, simple lines
- Elaborate and detailed wood mouldings create depth and shadow
- Patterned panelling on walls and ceilings: shiplap, pennygap, board & batten, etc
- Focus walls using wood moulding and trim for maximum texture and visual interest
Wood mouldings come in all sizes and range in sophistication from simple and clean used to generate elegant, low impact finishes, to elaborate and detailed designs that really bring large rooms to life.
Similarly, wood panelling for walls and ceilings comes with a variety of installation choices. Shiplap, pennygap and board & batten are popular in entranceways, hallways, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms and dens. Different choices of wood yield different grain patterns and boards can be milled smooth or rough for even more texture.
Focus, or feature–or sensory–walls using wood panelling and/or wood trim as the medium of choice are gaining rapidly in popularity. There’s a wonderful opportunity here for a wide variety of artistic, architectural, tactile, and decorative expressions.
Warm colour palette
Cooler palettes and greys are fading in favour of the warmer, richer, organic selection that different woods provide. Tones vary across the board (pun intended!) from the paler shades of maple and fir, the yellow hues of pine and hemlock, the reds of cherry, cedar and mahogany, and the warm to dark browns of oak and walnut.
The spectrum of colour explodes once you bring stains into the picture. So there’s a colour for every room and every expression.
We invite you to explore all the different ways to use wood mouldings and panelling in your home. Create inviting, peaceful, beautiful environments for you and your family to live in.
