Channel siding and bevel siding provide coveted functional and aesthetic value to homes. Each type has a particular look and a preferred use, and both are beautiful. Today we’re going to compare channel siding, which is used indoors or outdoors, with bevel siding, which is typically used outdoors.

Channel siding

  • Indoors or outdoors
  • Horizontal or vertical installation
  • Weatherproof
  • Attractive, rustic aesthetic
  • Rough or smooth finish

Channel siding consists of boards that neatly nestle together one atop the other. Each board has a wide groove milled into the top of the facing side, and a more narrow channel milled into the bottom back. This shaping allows the boards to sit snugly together but it also produces two other effects. One, it keeps water out, so this siding is weatherproof. Two, the grooves create a 1” channel between the boards, establishing visual interest and an attractive aesthetic.

Since it sheds water well, channel siding works well in outdoor applications, such as on home exteriors and outbuildings. It takes well to stains to achieve a wide variety of colours and can be installed horizontally or vertically.

It also works extremely well indoors. While waterproofing isn’t necessary inside your home, natural wood channel siding provides insulating value and sound damping which makes a more comfortable environment for your family. Many homeowners also appreciate its rustic, cozy vibe and eye-pleasing pattern.

Bevel siding

  • Economical
  • Outdoor application
  • Horizontal installation
  • Excellent weatherproofing
  • Pairs well with board and batten siding

Bevel siding is also known as clapboard and weatherboard. Boards are rough-sawn on an angle to produce a tapered shape; narrow at the top and thicker toward the bottom. It’s a version of lap siding, where each board overlaps the one below. This arrangement produces two coveted features. First, it forms a weather-tight layer on house exteriors. Second, it creates a lovely, subtle 3-D effect that looks beautiful and contributes to curb appeal.

Bevel siding is used in outdoor applications where its attractive aesthetic and excellent weather resistance shine. It pairs especially well with board and batten siding installed on gable ends.
