Wood panelling is a treasured and timeless choice for home-decorating. If you haven’t fallen in love with it yet, here’s a great reason to embrace it: It’s incredibly easy to design with! Use it to enhance the overall beauty of your décor by combining it with a wide variety of other materials like dry wall, concrete, stone, glass, metal, brick, paint, and fabric.

Wood panelling design tips

  • Contrast with manufactured materials
  • Combine with other natural materials
  • Mix with other decorative materials

Wood panelling is so versatile, both as a natural material and in a finished form, that it’s entirely possible to enhance the aesthetics of your existing décor no matter what it is. Or, choose something completely new.

Manufactured materials

If you are currently surrounded by manufactured materials like drywall and concrete, and you’re finding them a little plain and lifeless, add warmth and texture by incorporating wood panelling. The contrast between inert materials which lend a colder feeling, and real wood, highlights the warm and cosy comfort we get from wood features in our homes.

How much you add is up to you, however some popular choices include wainscoting on the lower half of walls; selecting one wall to panel with wood as a focus wall; and designating a section of wall to feature some artistic flair by playing with colour and lighting, or adding greenery for a ‘living wall’ effect.

Natural materials

Natural materials combine beautifully with one another because they give off the same vibe. It provides a cohesive feeling that feels satisfying and calming to our nervous system. So anywhere you have stonework, rock, glass, metal or brick is a place that will instantly harmonise with wood panelling. And because wood is such a versatile material, you can play with colour and grain to further complement the tones and shades in your other materials.

Decorative materials

Wood panelling also complements other decorative elements in a room such as the furniture and window dressings. Continuing with the natural theme, leather furniture, linen curtains and sheepskin or wool rugs all act as companion materials to create a beautiful aesthetic with a unifying theme. But that’s not the only way.

Other ways to tie things together include painting, paint-washing, or staining your wood panelling so it stands out or blends into your existing design. It makes for an easy work-around whenever you decide to change up your décor as well so you don’t stay trapped in one look. In case you prefer your panelling to remain in the background but still add interest, consider panels that are more highly textured. An acoustic wall is a fantastic example of this. Plus it comes with additional features like modifying sound quality to create a more comfortable environment for people to be in.
