Combine the trend toward downsizing with the increase in renting, and you see the reality is many of us are living in smaller spaces. While this makes for a cosy atmosphere, it would be even better if you could make it look bigger than it actually is, just for the peace-of-mind. Fortunately, there are a few tricks to give your living spaces a larger look and feel. All it takes are some simple techniques using wood panelling. Here’s how.

Wood panelling techniques for small spaces

  • Use small slats & acoustic panelling
  • Create lines
  • Make simple features
  • Don’t overdo it!

Small slats & acoustic panels

Small-slatted wood panelling adds finer detail, depth, and texture to your home. Whereas larger slats would add a clunkier feel and overwhelm a tiny space, small slats add refinement. For an added bonus, use small slats in the form of an acoustic wall. It brings visual interest plus it improves sound quality.  Residents and guests will find it more comfortable to relax and be in that space.

Create lines

Vertical lines make a room look taller. Horizontal lines help it look longer. Diagonal lines keep the eye moving, so help the room feel larger.

Make simple features

Install vertical panels in specific areas like the entryway, or where the dining room table sits, behind the couch or behind your bed. The idea is to delineate certain areas without closing them in. Creating unique spaces within a small area encourages the idea there are several rooms, which inherently makes the space feel larger.

Add lighting or plants to make a proper feature wall. It doesn’t have to cover the whole wall either, though you could do that too and it would look amazing. See what looks best in the space you have.

Waitscoting is a popular way to create horizontal lines in your home. It separates the top of the room from the bottom and makes the room look higher. Choose from light-coloured woods to keep the atmosphere feeling  lighter and brighter.

Don’t overdo it

The key to using wood panelling to transform tiny spaces is to keep it simple, keep the slats small, and use it to accent areas. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes!
