Your home is not complete without mouldings providing the perfect finishing touches in every room. Around windows and doors, framing ceilings and floors, it’s a big job that beautifies and adds value! So good quality, long-lasting materials are a priority. In this article we’ll go over the lifespan of different types of moulding materials, like wood, MDF, PVC , and vinyl. Plus we’ll look at a few other considerations for this important building feature.
Wood mouldings
Wood moldings typically last 20-35 years, with hardwoods lasting longer, in general, than softwoods. They are easily and endlessly customisable, reusable, sustainable, and recyclable. Most people show a real preference for, and appreciation of, wood mouldings for their natural beauty, warmth, and traditional feel. Wood mouldings are a timeless feature that adds a level of class and elegance that is not matched by any other material.
MDF mouldings
MDF mouldings are made from wood fibres and plastic. They’re popular for the budget-minded but will last only about 10 years. The reason for the short lifespan is MDF is highly susceptible to water damage, as anyone who has set down a wet glass onto an MDF table can attest: The resulting bubbled-up circle is not fixable. MDF moulding could be an option in areas with no humidity and no chance of encountering water. Painting and sealing will also help extend its life.
PVC mouldings
PVC mouldings generally last 25-40 years. Unlike MDF, PVC is moisture-resistant and so a good choice for areas like a bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, entryway or mudroom. PVC is cheaper than wood mouldings, however it has a number of disadvantages that make it less so in the long run. For instance, it’s brittle, so nail holes need to be predrilled. It tends to break if you try to remove it or fix it, so it’s not reusable. It doesn’t take paint or stain well so you’re stuck with the colour it comes in (white). And since it’s made of plastic, it’s not sustainable nor recyclable, and it off-gasses chemicals into the home environment.
Vinyl mouldings
Vinyl mouldings are another budget option that last around 10-20 years. Like PVC, they resist moisture, making them a good option for humid rooms or places where it might be exposed to water. Vinyl mouldings do not do well under UV rays though so is not ideal for sunrooms or anywhere they will be exposed to sunlight.
All things considered, wood mouldings are unmatched in the ability to be customised for a homeowners style and preferences. Though they may be the more expensive option initially, their long lifespan, reusability, and added value they bring to the home, easily make up for it.
