Leaving out wood trim in your home is like forgetting to ice a cake. Sure, you can still eat the cake, but no one is raving about it and most consider it unfinished.
We can’t help with the cake, but we can give some ideas that show just how essential wood trim is to room design. You can take one or more of these ideas and tailor them for your own home and preferences.

Finish a room
A room might look ok with furniture and a well-placed rug, however, just like that un-iced cake, it will still look and feel unfinished without wood trim. Add some basic trim around windows and doors (called casings) to help define these important features. In the same vein, add trim where walls meet the ceiling (called mouldings) and/or the floor (called baseboards). Even if you prefer a minimal look, you can customise the size of the trim all the way down to a few centimeters. It will still make a difference.
Balance a space
Wood trim can help balance a space to bring greater visual appeal to large rooms and/or those with high ceilings. Here are some options to manage room scale and proportion with various wood trims:
- Choose wide baseboards and crown mouldings.
- Choose more elaborate, decorative and detailed trims
- Add a chair rail – usually about 1 metre up from the floor*
- Add wainscotting – usually ⅓ the wall’s height*
- Add a picture rail – generally at 70% of the wall’s height*
* These measurements are averaged and are best customised to individual room sizes.
Set the tone
Wood trim adds to the architectural tone of your room design. So whether you prefer a rustic feel, victorian elegance, or contemporary simplicity, use trim to enhance the look of your home.
Decorative/accent wall
Accent walls provide an opportunity to get creative and add depth to your space. Use wood trim to create custom designs on one wall of a room. Designs can be abstract in nature, geometric, artistic, intricate; whatever looks best for your style. The sky is the limit here, with minimalism and simplicity on one end, boldness and drama on the other. Popular designs include board and batten and modular themes. This is a budget-friendly way to add depth and dimension.
Acoustic wall
Acoustic walls are a form of accent wall that adds functionality as well. They’re easy to create using wood trim over sound-reducing material. Acoustic walls absorb sound to prevent it from bouncing around the room causing echoes and reverberations. The result is improved sound quality and reduced noise. Acoustic walls are popular in bedrooms, home offices, home theatres and music rooms.
